ALTON - Burglars who recently started using a sharp tool to deftly punch through car doors, just under their locks to release them, have hit 18 to 20 vehicles in Alton in the past three weeks.
"It has been a problem," said Lt. Scott Golike, chief of detectives at the Alton Police Department.
Golike said there had been 20 or 22 car burglaries reported in all of September, but as of noon Friday, 26 already had been reported in October. He said 18 to 20 of the burglaries have involved the "punch" entry during the past six weeks, including 11 of October's 26 reported car burglaries.
