Lambert plans to bring new airlines to St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (KMOV)-- Lambert's airport director announced Lambert will have a hiring freeze and will not fill 50 open jobs.

?

Airport Director Richard Hrabko said his team is pulling out all the stops to make sure the airport stays afloat. The key to getting that done is getting new flights to Lambert.

?

On Wednesday, the airport commission took the first step, approving $1.6 million in incentive funding. Basically, the money will help the airlines wave some of start up costs it takes to launch routes.

Airline officials are working against the clock. All of that money must be spent by this coming June.

Hrabko said he talked to the airlines and they want incentives, so St. Louis is ready to play ball.

News 4 found out the airport's talking to at least 6 different airlines about adding flights. Hrabko wouldn't get specific. But he told News 4 a similar program swayed Southwest to add flights and Airtran to start flying out of Lambert.
