A proposal from Gov. Pat Quinn and the Illinois Department of Corrections to try to balance the state budget by releasing 1,000 convicts into the general population has brought criticism from a state lawmaker and various union representatives.
The plan calls for the prisoners to be released in December. The release would coincide with cuts to front line prison staff at the Vandalia and Decatur correctional centers.
Republican state Sen. Kyle McCarter, whose district dips into Hamel and Alhambra, calls the idea "short-sighted" and "dangerous."
