ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A 23-month-old child was struck and killed when he wondered into traffic Monday evening, St. Louis police said.
Police spokeswoman Erica Van Ross said the accident happened around 5 p.m. in the 4000 block of Oregon Avenue, near the intersection with Osage Street.
Van Ross said several teenagers were watching the child, who was not identified, when they became involved in a fight.
In the confusion, Van Ross said, the child wondered into the street and was hit.
The child was taken to a St. Louis hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the car that hit the child stopped a short time later and is cooperating with police, Van Ross said.
Police said it was unclear if any charges would be filed.
