ST. LOUIS (AP) -- One woman died and an off-duty St. Louis police officer and her boyfriend were injured Monday after being shot during a robbery.
The robbery happened shortly after 1 a.m. Monday. The 27-year-old officer was shot at least three times and was in critical condition. Her 29-year-old boyfriend was shot in the neck and was in serious condition.
Police identified the woman killed in the shooting as 34-year-old Gina Stallis.
A 22-year-old suspect, identified as Mario Coleman of St. Louis, was charged late Monday with one count of first-degree murder, two counts each of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery, one count of burglary, and six counts of armed criminal action. He was being held on $1 million cash bond.
A 16-year-old suspect was also in police custody.
Police said the officer, a two-year veteran, was walking to her vehicle with her boyfriend when two armed men approached and forced them back into a home. Six other people were inside the house, and the suspects announced a hold up.
Police said a struggle began. The officer was shot twice in the chest and once in the leg, and doctors were still trying to determine whether she had other wounds. She had surgery early Monday.
Stallis was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at a hospital.
No one else inside the home was injured. Police did not say who lived in the home or whether there had been some kind of gathering there.
Soon after the shooting, a young man matching the description of one of the suspects showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand. He was treated for the injury, then placed in juvenile custody.
It wasn't immediately clear how he was injured. Police do not believe anyone in the home returned fire.
Meanwhile, a person matching the description of the second suspect was found in a vehicle near the entrance to Forest Park, where he was arrested.
Police said they recovered two weapons and property taken from the home during the robbery.
