(KMOV) -- The East St. Louis city council has delayed discussing the layoffs of 26 employees, including 19 police officers.
Mayor Alvin Parks says he hopes the police department and other city employees can work with the city on concessions. Parks has offered giving up his $50,000 per year salary and benefits to save the job of one police officer. Mayor Parks says East St. Louis needs more officers on the street, not fewer.
The layoffs would go into effect January 1st. The proposal is meant to balance the city's $22 million budget.
