(KMOV) -- A 43-year-old husband and father of two young children is dead following a single vehicle accident Wednesday evening in St. Charles County.
The accident happened at Highway 94 and Church Road near Orchard Farm. The victim was driving a truck that crashed and rolled.
The victim has been identified as Darin Westhues from St. Peters.
Crews on the scene say that conditions were so bad that the roads in that area should have been closed all along.
The fire chief for Orchard Farm Protection says the driver did not have a chance to react to the slick conditions.
At the time of the crash, Westhues was heading home after working some overtime hours in order to get some extra money for Christmas.
Westhues was a construction worker who won a state baseball championship for Duchesne High School in 1984. He is said to have never considered anyone a stranger and loved to hunt.
Westhues leaves behind a wife and two children. Hunter is a fourth grader, Jayden is a first grader at All Saints in St. Peters. Family members are now turning their attention to these two children.
Westhues’ sister, Debi Westhues, says, “Our focus right now is the kids - to make sure they are okay and happy and still living the life that Darin would want them to live. And not to be sad, but to celebrate. Daddy’s not gone, he’s just not here.”
A memorial has been set up to help his children.
Memorials go to the Darin Westhues Childrens Memorial Education Fund in care of First State Bank, 206 North 5th Street in St. Charles.
