(KMOV) -- An eighth grader in O’Fallon, Illinois was caught with a knife at school on Wednesday, and school officials did not alert police.

Police say a student brought a knife to Joseph Arthur Middle School, and they were never alerted about the incident by the school officials. Police were tipped about the incident when News 4’s Marc Cox called them for more information on the situation.

The superintendent would not confirm or deny that there was a weapon brought to school.

Several sources say that the student is an 8th grade boy, and that the knife was confiscated after it was shown to another student.

There is no indication that anyone was threatened.

School officials did not alert the resource officer station at the school about the situation either.

It is not known if any disciplinary action was taken against the student.
