(KMOV)-- It is a mistake a lot of people are making these days, especially now that temperatures are so low.
Police say we all feel tempted to start our cars in the morning and head back inside, but they warn that not only is an empty car an advertisement to thieves, but it can cost you a ticket, as well.
St. Louis city has an ordinance against the practice, and the ticket can cost offenders $25.
Police say stolen cars are the bigger issue, though, and they are asking the city to use common sense.
There have been almost 4,000 car thefts in St. Louis so far this year.
One St. Louis sergeant says the most unfortunate case she has seen involved a woman with wrapped Christmas presents in her idle car.
She lost everything to a thief.
