FDA investigating safety of amalgam fillings

(KMOV)-- The FDA is once again looking into the safety of amalgam fillings.

Tens of millions of Americans have this type of silver filling, which contains mercury.
Consumer advocacy groups say mercury can trigger health problems including neurological disorders, breathing issues, and heart disease.
Dentist Mark Breiner says mercury is a hazardous waste, and even has to be disposed as such when removed from the mouth. He questions mercury’s safety.
Other dentists though, like Dr. David Tarrab of NYU College of Dentistry, claim there is nothing wrong with using amalgams.
Numerous studies show the level of mercury in the fillings is too low to induce health issues.
Most dentists now use white composite to fill teeth because it looks better, but amalgam is still popular because of the cheaper cost.
