ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- Veterinarians at an Alton-area animal hospital say a Shetland sheepdog who had her abdomen punctured by an arrow has survived surgery and appears quite alert.
The dog, named in Shelby, was picked up Thursday morning in Godfrey and put into the care of Jackie Spiker and Kim Lee of Hope Animal Rescues in Alton.
The women took Shelby to Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital in Collinsville, where her spleen was removed and veterinarians repaired four injured areas in her intestines. She has since been transferred to Hawthorne Animal Hospital in Glen Carbon.
Spiker tells the (Alton) Telegraph that if all goes well, Shelby could be released into foster care within a few days. She says she is seeking donations for Shelby's medical bills, which may be about $2,400.
