(KMOV)-- A man accidentally shot himself in the leg while burglars took property from a car around 4:40 a.m. Thursday.
According to police, the 51-year-old victim stated he was inside his home on the 4600 block of Vernon, when he heard noises outside. The victim stated he saw three men inside a family member's car parked on the street.
Police say the victim got a gun and walked outside. He then slipped on his porch causing the gun to accidentally discharge, striking the victim in the leg.
The suspects fled from the scene east on Vernon in a small dark 4-door vehicle.
The victim was taken to an area hospital and listed in stable condition.
The victim stated several items were taken from the vehicle. There is no information on the value of the stolen items.
The victim was the registered owner of the gun.
The investigation is ongoing.
