Aldermen seek ordinance to solicit city residents for money to support homeless

(KMOV) – You could find a request to help the homeless or Heat Up St. Louis in your next water bill if some St. Louis aldermen can rally support for a new ordinance similar to the city’s appeal to help its old animal shelter.

The money will go to local agencies, and some aldermen have a plan to keep track of every penny.

Alderwoman April Ford-Griffith says this plan will keep the homeless off the streets on extremely cold nights. She also says there is a check and balance system in place for those groups that get the money.

“We are asking for annual reports,” she says. “We want to know how much they spent.”

Nearly a million dollars was cut out of the city’s budget to help the homeless last year. Despite less money, the need is still growing, and that’s why Griffin says they’ve lined up established agencies that can help.

If the ordinance is approved, the request will appear on your water bill, personal property and real estate tax.

The Board of Alderman will vote on the ordinance on Friday.
