(KMOV) – Thieves are targeting O’Fallon, Illinois homes while the victims are asleep.
Police say the criminals invaded four homes in the past week in O’Fallon, with the latest incident happening Monday morning.
The thieves are targeting two story homes where residents usually sleep upstairs, giving burglars easy access to their belongings on the ground floor, police say.
But that’s not the only thing the targeted homes have in common – in each one, police say a door or window was left unlocked. The easy entry gave thieves access to items like cash, purses, iPods and other small electronics.
And with the holiday season here and more gifts inside, police say it’s now as important as ever to remember to lock up.
The police department is even warning O’Fallon neighbors by calling them. The city’s “Code Red” system is sending out a crime blast – a recorded alert for those signed up on the city’s website.
Police are still looking for the burglar.
Monday morning, a homeowner’s 9-year-old spotted the thief red-handed. But he escaped.
Police say if you notice anyone you don’t recognize in your neighborhood, give them a call immediately.
