CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (KMOV) -- Despite 22 points and 13 rebounds from Jenna Smith, Illinois lost to the Penn State Nittany Lions 67-56 Sunday before 2,386 fans in the Fighting Illini's home finale at Assembly Hall.
With 10:44 left in the game, Penn State led 47-43 before Illinois tied the game at 47-all.
A jumper by Smith gave the Illini a short lived 49-47 lead with 7:48 in the second half.
Brianne O'Rourke put Penn State back 50-49 with a three. This sparked a 17-7 run on which the Nittany Lions' ended the game.
The game remained close in the first half. Illinois tied the game at 8-all before Penn State pulled ahead 24-15. The Illini answered and led 31-30 at halftime.
One of the game's metaphors, only five players scored for the Illini (8-18, 4-11) while Penn State (9-16, 4-11) had four players reaching double figures.
Janessa Wolff led Penn State with 15 points and Tyra Grant added 14. Mashea Williams (13) and Brianne O'Rourke (12) also paced the offense. Julia Trogele recorded 11 rebounds.
For Illinois, Lydia McCully registered 12 points and Macie Blinn tallied nine.
Illinois travels to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes on Feb. 26 and wraps up its regular season at Minnesota on March 1.
