URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- The former gymnastics coach at the University of Illinois is set to appear in court Feb. 10 for a pretrial hearing on charges he videotaped a gymnast in a campus locker room.
John Valdez of Urbana coached at the Beijing Olympics. Champaign County prosecutors charged him in November with one felony count of unauthorized videotaping.
Valdez resigned from the university in October, citing personal issues. He is free on his own recognizance.
Prosecutors say a 22-year-old student gymnast found a handheld video camera partially hidden under a T-shirt in a locker in September.
Police searched Valdez's home and found the camera, but the images were deleted. Technicians were able to restore the deleted images.
