URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- A judge has given former Illinois basketball player Jamar Smith a second chance, giving him 18 months probation after Smith drank alcohol in violation of an earlier probation sentence.
Smith will have to wear an ankle bracelet that monitors alcohol intake while on probation.
The 21-year-old Peoria native acknowledged during a morning court appearance that he's an alcoholic.
Smith also says he's moving to Evansville, Indiana, where he plans to enroll at the University of Southern Indiana and eventually play basketball.
Smith pleaded guilty last year to felony driving under the influence causing great bodily harm. He drove a car into a tree in February 2007, injuring former teammate Brian Carlwell.
