Feldman: Rams will try to win ugly each week

The Greatest Show on Turf is gone folks.  And it ain’t coming back, that’s for sure.  The days of Kurt Warner dropping back and heaving long bombs to the likes of Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce couldn’t be any further removed from the present.

These are the new Rams for better or worse.  And they won’t attempt to win games with style.

Just look at who they took in Round 1 of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.  OL Greg Robinson is a mauler.  DL Aaron Donald is a penetrator.  Both help control the line of scrimmage.  That’s where games will be won or lost for the Rams.

Think of it this way.  The Rams will be doing a whole heck of a lot of running the football behind Zac Stacy this year.  They’ll attempt to control the clock and wear down opponents on the ground.  They plan on playing great defense.

Next thing you know, it’ll be 17-14 Rams with 1:37 to go in the 4th quarter and you’re not sure how the game got to that point.

The Rams won’t be doing a lot to “wow” you or anyone you know.  They won’t be trying to copy the 1999 Rams in terms of style points.  That’s not how Jeff Fisher plays football.  He is an old school, smash mouth coach who tries to win in the ugliest of ways possible.

If a nice 60-yard touchdown pass is there for the taking, sure, by all means they’ll take it.  But that won’t be the offensive philosophy du jour.

Expect running.  Lots and lots of running the football behind Zac Stacy and this newly rebuilt offensive line featuring Jake Long (LT), Greg Robinson (LG), Scott Wells ©, Rodger Saffold (RG) and TBD (RT).  More offensive linemen will be selected this draft, I have no doubt.

Expect a dominant defensive front featuring Chris Long (DE), Aaron Donald (DT), Michael Brockers (NT) and Robert Quinn (DE).  Then in the nickel package you take out Brockers for maybe the most overlooked backup defensive end in football in William Hayes.

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams must be chomping at the bit to get started with this group.

I don’t know how many wins the Rams will have next season.  They play in a brutal NFC West which features three teams that won at least 10 games last year, including the Super Bowl champion.

But there is one thing I do know, those teams will have to win some ugly football games in order to top the Rams.  Just how Jeff Fisher likes it.
