(KMOV.com) – A facility for growing medical marijuana may soon be built in St. Clair County.
The St. Clair County Zoning Commission recently approved to a plan to change zoning laws to allow a marijuana growing facility to open in the county, but the proposal needs to be approved by the county council to become official.
County officials told News 4 they are hoping to move quickly, because two companies are currently bidding to run the facility.
Under a law passed by the Illinois legislature, medical marijuana facilities are tightly regulated. Only one growing facility may be open in the Metro East. Such a facility may not be close to a school, daycare or house of worship and must have tight security.
News 4 has learned the new growing center is likely to be near Marissa, because it is in a rural section of St. Clair County.
