BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- A southwestern Illinois man has been sentenced to 53 years in prison for his role in the 2012 stabbing death of his estranged wife during a home invasion.
The woman’s boyfriend was also wounded in the attack.
Twenty-five-year-old John Cole of Belleville was convicted in February of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He was sentenced Monday.
Authorities say Le’Nae Cole was stabbed 33 times in her Belleville apartment while the Coles’ small children were in the next room. Her boyfriend was stabbed 17 times but survived.
La’Nae Cole had filed for divorce a month before the killing and had a protection order against John Cole.
John Cole’s cousin Garfield Fenton was convicted of murder and attempted murder last year in the attack and is serving a 30-year sentence.
