Police: Many St. Louis-area sex offenders not registered

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) - News 4 has learned that dozens of sex offenders in the Metro East are not in the official state sex offender registry.

Under Illinois law, sex offenders are supposed to register their address with Illinois State Police. Authorities told News 4 that around 94 such offenders who live in Madison and St. Clair Counties are not registered.

“They are required to register so that police can monitor their whereabouts, so that they can stay compliant and not re-offend,” Captain Jim Morissey with the Illinois State Police said.

News 4 went searching for a sex offender who has not registered. News 4’s Craig Cheatham went to an address that is supposed to be the home registered sex offender Jonathan Hogue, but Hogue does not live there. The person who actually lives in that home told News 4 that Hogue mostly lives on the streets.

Missouri, Illinois, and the federal government all keep a registry. The public can search for sex offenders in their area typing in a zip code, county, city, or last name.
