(BaseballStL) -- Adam Wainwright will have the chance to earn his fifth win of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday afternoon in the series’ rubber match.
Wainwright will get the chance for NL lead in wins in a rematch against the Pirates and Edinson Volquez. On April 6, Wainwright and the Cardinals dropped a close affair 2-1. Wainwright pitched 7.0 innings and gave up 2 runs off of doubles from Neil Walker and Tony Sanchez.
In turn the Redbirds struggled against Volquez, only earning 3 hits from Matt Carpenter, Jon Jay and Wainwright. Volquez has a great ERA at 1.93, but just a 1-1 record in his five starts.
Both Matt Holliday and Allen Craig have batting averages over .300 against Volquez. The Cards desperately need more offense from Craig who is batting below .200 and has more strikeouts than hits.
The streak ends
Yadier Molina went hitless in Saturday afternoon’s game. The 31-year-old catcher struck out twice and his streak ended at 15 games.
Last season, Molina’s longest hit streak was 11 games. This 15 game streak was the longest in Molina’s career.
Hunt for Homers
The Redbirds are going through a home run drought. Craig was the last player to have hit a homer on April 16th against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Jhonny Peralta leads the Cardinals with 4 homers on the season. He hit jacks in back to back games on April 14th and 15th, but hasn’t hit one since. Matt Adams, Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday and Jon Jay are the only other players to have gone yard.
It has been over two weeks since a home run has been hit at Busch Stadium as Adams hit a bomb against the Chicago Cubs on April 12th.
