(KMOV) – There was a legal showdown in St. Louis after several people asked a city judge to dismantle the entire red light camera system.

Attorneys for several women, who have received tickets after running red lights, say they want people to know there are currently no penalties for not paying up.

“I don’t pay mine, I feel comfortable not paying it, there’s never been any warrants issued and the courts have said the whole ordinance is void as a matter of law,” said Bevis Schock, attorney-at-law.

Attorneys on the other side, say that’s simply not so, they argue the city’s ordinance is legal and keeps people safe. They argue the law said people should not ignore their tickets.

Both sides will battle it out in court next month. So far, $6 million have been collected in fines in 2013.
