In a year that has seen KMOV become St. Louis’ number one newscast, our station continues to work to bring residents the absolute best local coverage.

In that spirit, KMOV is excited to announce Maurice Drummond as the new Sports Director.

Maurice has spent 25 years covering sports, and brings more than 15 years experience in the St. Louis market to KMOV.  In his quarter century of work, he has been based in cities from Washington D.C. to New York, and worked with stations like ESPN and The Golf Channel.

“It’s been a dream come true to do something I always wanted to do,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet some of the greatest and most intriguing athletes of all time.”

In addition to interviewing local athletes like Albert Pujols, Maurice has also interviewed sports legends like Hank Aaron and Muhammad Ali.

As Sports Director, Maurice’s goal is simple: take fans where they haven’t been before.

“I want to bring the locker room home to the fans,” he said. “I want them to feel like they have an all-access pass. We’re going to provide that every day. We’ll take them on the road; we’ll give them in-depth interviews. We are going to give people what they can’t get on ESPN.”

Maurice’s philosophy on local sports is one driven by relationships. As fans look for information on their favorite players and teams, they turn to the sportscasters that know them best.

“National outlets have a tendency to cover what moves the needle. A lot of times that’s the biggest markets and the drama,” he said. “Maybe you’re wondering about Yadier Molina and if he’s dinged up and going to play today. Is ESPN going to give you that? No, you have to be there day in and day out. That’s where we’ll be”

St. Louis is a sports town, and a unique one at that. Part of what makes the city and the area special, Maurice says, is the history.

“There’s a long history of sports in this city. There was a die hard hockey base that went to the next level with Brett Hull. Football was here, left and came back. The Cardinals are a historically great franchise,” he said. “These teams are woven into the fabric of the city.”

Maurice added the generational fandom of St. Louis’ teams is another important aspect for sportscasters.

“These were your grandparents’ teams, your parents’ teams, your teams and your kids’ teams,” he said.

In that spirit, Maurice has stressed sports coverage for the digital generations as well as the television-driven ones.

In addition to presence on social media, KMOV sports takes coverage mobile with a fleet of smartphone apps covering every St. Louis team as well as Mizzou hoops and football.

Maurice’s goal is to keep fans connected to their teams no matter how far they are from home.

“We’ll be there, and we’ll take you there,” he said. “We’ll bring the teams into your home and into your phone.”
