(KMOV.com) – The Edwardsville School District broke ground on a new aquatic center today. All thanks to a generous donation from a private citizen of the town.

Edwardsville native Sharon Fruit donated $4 million to the project. The new center will house an Olympic-sized pool and will allow the school district to host swim meets. Fruit made the large donation to honor the memory of her late husband, Chuck- a former executive with Coca-Cola.

The Edwardsville Glen Carbon Hamel Midway Foundation is raising an additional $1.3 million to reach the project goal of $5.3 million.
