(KMOV) – A former St. Charles County teacher who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 10-year-old student he was home schooling was sentenced to probation on Monday.
Joseph Maddock, 34, was sentenced to five years probation in St. Charles County court on child molestation charges. He was initially charged with first-degree statutory sodomy, but the sentence was reduced during plea negotiations.
He was also sentenced to 15 years suspended execution of sentence. Sources told News 4 the family of the victim did not want the case to go to trial, which helped lead to the plea bargain.
Police say Maddock met the boy in 2012 while teaching 3rd grade at Andrews Academy in Lake St. Louis.
Authorities say around that time he convinced the 5th-grade boy’s parents to let him home school the child at his house in the 11 block of Lemans Drive.
According to court documents, Maddock taught the victim five days a week in his finished basement from Sept. 2012 to Feb. 2013.
Authorities say during several teaching sessions, Maddock would lay down on the couch and read to the student while rubbing his back and stomach.
Police say Maddock admitted to placing his hands on the child’s private area during a reading session in Jan. 2013. Authorities said Maddock confessed to the crime after the boy’s mother called police.
According to records, Maddock taught in 10 schools in the St. Louis and St. Charles areas between 2001 and 2012.
News 4 tried contacting some of Maddock’s previous schools, but officials would not comment.
