(KMOV.com) -- The subject of a News 4 investigation is headed to federal prison.

Matt Buckingham was sentenced to one year in prison followed by one year of probation.

Buckingham impersonated a member of the armed services and collected money while claiming to be a veteran running a charity for former service members.

Buckingham reportedly told women he was raising money for the troops, and convinced them to sell raffle tickets at local bars.

The money never made it to the troops, as the charity turned out to be fake.

Buckingham told women he was in Homeland Security, the Marines and the Coast Guard during different meetings, and claimed to have been to Afghanistan twice.

Monday in court, his lawyer told the judge Buckingham was obsessed with the military and that he promised not to do it again.
