( – A Compton Heights neighborhood robbery Sunday night left residents shocked.

The female victim was walking from her car to her house around 7:30 p.m. with her arms filled with groceries. What happened next, she says she’ll never forget.

“They were right up on me and showed me a gun and said give me all your money,” said the victim, who wished to remain anonymous. “I threw everything at them and said take everything.”

The victim says her husband mentioned unfamiliar faces hanging around the neighborhood just a few days ago.

“He said you know there seems to be some suspicious characters in our neighborhood right now, fishing around in the middle of the day,” she said.

Other residents say car break-ins are recently on the rise as well.

James Clark with Better Family Life says the armed robbery on Russell Avenue is not a surprise.

“Maybe seven years ago if that would have occurred in this neighborhood, I would have been surprised,” he said. “But we have allowed a very, very violent subculture to be born in the urban core.”

Clark believes these types of crimes will continue to happen unless parents become more involved with their children’s lives.

“It’s highly unfortunate that it happened, but I just feel so fortunate that no one was hurt. Obviously we want to keep those things from happening anywhere,” he said.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says there hasn’t been an increase of crime in the area, but police are seeing more cell phone related crimes.

In this case the victim’s cell phone was taken along with her purse and all her groceries.
