(CNN) – A new report suggests retailers are not doing much to protect customer data from hackers.

According to a Verizon Cybersecurity report, companies tend to bulk up their security just before passing payment card industry tests. The tests are needed if shops which to accept credit cards.

The report suggest only 29 percent of companies maintain the security post-test and only a third of all companies regularly test their networks for holes.

The report also says that companies regularly fail to patch systems for bugs, as well as update passwords and firewalls.
