(KMOV.com) – An Illinois State Park volunteer fireman has been let go from his position after being charged with two felony counts of arson.

Robert L. Schlechter, 18, was arrested and charged November 22 after a joint investigation between the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the State Park Fire Department.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, on September 4th the State Park Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 8500 block of Fairview Boulevard. When firefighters arrived at the scene they discovered two unoccupied homes on fire.

Investigators determined that neither home involved in the fire had electric or gas service. Based on evidence at the scene, investigators determined that the fires were due to arson. Investigators linked the evidence to Schelchter.

At the time of the fires, Schlechter had been a volunteer with the department for two weeks.

Schlechter was arrested shortly after a warrant was issued and is being held on $60,000 bond.
