(KMOV.com) – Several residents in the Metro East contacted News 4 after being awoken by tornado sirens Friday morning. It turns out they were accidentally turned on by a St. Clair County 9-1-1 dispatcher.
The sirens reportedly went off in Mascoutah, Swansea, Fairview Heights, Caseyville, Hollywood Heights, O’Fallon and Belleville around 5:15 a.m.
Officials say the county doesn’t own the individual sirens, but is responsible for activating them in case of emergency.
Authorities attributed the mistake to simply a human error.
