Police: Suspect tried to flush 4 lbs. of pot

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- A Casa Grande man is being held without bond after Pinal County sheriff's deputies caught him apparently trying to flush a large quantity of marijuana down his toilet.

According to PCSO spokesman Tim Gaffney, investigators with the Pinal County Narcotics Task Force served a search warrant at the home of Christopher Cruz on Tuesday.

"Christopher was in the process of attempting to flush a large quantity of marijuana down the toilet," Gaffney said in a news release. "He was quickly taken into custody without incident."

In addition to the drugs -- about 4 pounds of marijuana -- deputies also discovered two shotguns and a handgun.

Cruz was booked on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, destruction of evidence and weapons misconduct. Because there were two young children in the house, Cruz also faces two counts of endangerment.

According to Gaffney, Cruz, 20, has a prior felony conviction for criminal damage.

"Suspect Cruz attempted to flush nearly four pounds of marijuana down the toilet to avoid arrest," Pinal county Sheriff Paul Babeu said. "I'm sure he now wishes he invested in a plunger for his house and he may have gotten away with the possession charge. With his prior felony conviction and current charges, he will likely be serving sometime in prison."

Gaffney said the pot Cruz tried to flush had a street value of about $3,000.

"In Arizona it goes for about $750 a pound," he explained. "The costs are higher as the marijuana makes it way east across the states."

Casa Grande is about an hour southeast of Phoenix along I-10.
