(BaseballStL) – Out of 42 total draft picks in 2014, the Cardinals have signed 18 of them, including second-round pick Ronnie Williams.
Williams, a right-hander, will report to the Cardinals Gulf Coast League in Jupiter, Florida, along with RHP Tyler Dunnington (#855), 3B Julian Barzailli (945), LHP Sasha Kuebel (1,155) and RHP Davis Ward (1,215).
“Ronnie is an elite athlete who already has a repeatable delivery, feel for both a changeup and breaking ball,” Dan Kantrovitz, director of scouting, explained, “Ronnie is a great kid who will work as hard as anybody to find success in our system.”
LHP Jordan DeLorenzo (375) will head to the Johnson City Appalachian League team along with RHP Matt Pearce (405), CF Blake Drake (555), 2B Casey Turgeon (735), RHP Landon Beck (765) and RHP Josh Wirsu (915).
Finally, 2B Darren Seferina (165) reports to State College in the New York-Pennsylvania League along with SS Andrew Sohn (195), RF Nick Thompson (255), RHP Daniel Poncedeleon (285) and RHP Cody Schumaker (1,095).
“Darren is a burner on the base paths,” said Kantrovitz, “and possesses tremendous barrel accuracy with his bat.”
21-year-old Thompson lead all NCAA Division I athletes in runs scored at 69, earning 42 walks and an on base percentage of .479.
“Nick had one of the most impressive offensive seasons of any college player this year,” Kantrovitz continued, “He controls the strike zone very well and has game power to all fields.”
