The Metropolitan Sewer Department is busy spring cleaning to ensure it can handle the onslaught of recent rain seen in the St. Louis area.

MSD regularly cleans sewers every two years. They are now working to clear storm drains to prevent street flooding.

Anyone who sees flooded streets is asked to contact MSD so it can check those drains out.

“If they do see flooded streets, don’t take a chance and drive through it.  Turn around and go the other direction,” said Lance Lecomb with MSD. “It only takes a few inches of water to hydroplane a car or cause it to be stalled and stranded. It could be life-threatening in some situations. Turn around and go the opposite way.”

MSD offers the following tips this time of year:

- Make sure your gutters and any inlets in the street are clean.

- Turn all downspouts away from your home.

- Check your window wells, stairwell drains and sump pumps.
