(KMOV.com) – Family and friends mourned the loss of a soldier from Hillsboro who was killed in Afghanistan.
Private First Class Matt Walker was killed Thursday, when his unit was attacked in Afghanistan. Those who knew him told News 4 he was a well liked person who was eager to serve his county. Walker graduated from Grandview High School in Jefferson County in 2012.
“He always had a smile, he always worked hard,” said Grandview High Football Coach Mike Genge.
Walker served as an infantryman in the 101st airborne division. Walker was quoted in the yearbook saying he would join the military after graduation. Grandview faculty told News 4 graduates join the military almost every year.
“It is the first time we’ve had one fall in battle,” Principal Matt Zoph said. “We do have a proud history. Every year several students go off to the military.”
Genge said Walker was a leader on the football team.
"You never had to worry about if Matt was going to get the job done. You ask him to do something, you ask him to hustle and he did it to the best of his abilities," Genge said.
The Jefferson County Council is planning to hold a moment of silence at Monday night’s meeting on honor of Walker. Grandview administrators said the school will honor Walker.
