(KMOV) – Crews on Monday began to tear down more than two dozen run-down buildings in north St. Louis. The city hopes the demolition will create a prime location for future development.

Located by Ranken Technical College, the plans to tear down 26 vacant buildings on Evans from Newstead to Whittier.

Officials call the spot “ripe for revitalization” because of its proximity to strong neighbors like Ranken, the North Sarah development and Cortex, where a brand-new IKEA will break ground later this month.

City officials say another goal to tear down the properties is to reduce crime.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay officially kicked off the project at 2 p.m. in the 4330 block of Evans.

One resident who lives close an abandoned building told News 4 she wants the city to tear down more vacant buildings.

St. Louis officials plan to place a bond issue on the November ballot to fund more demolitions.
