Garcia rebounds with win against Jays

(BaseballStL) – In just his fifth start of the season, Jaime Garcia bounced back from an awful start against the Royals to shutting out the Toronto Blue Jays.

Garcia pitched 7.0 scoreless innings before handing the game over to the bullpen with a five run lead and they made it hold up to give Garcia his second victory on the year.

In his previous four starts, the southpaw had yet to walk someone, but Sunday he walked two in the first inning and one more throughout the game. But the free passes didn’t hurt Garcia as he threw 68 strikes in 106 pitches, the most pitches he’s thrown this season.

"He made some really nice pitches when he had to," manager Mike Matheny explained after the game, "He had a real good feel for everything today and executed when he had to. He did exactly what we needed for this last game."

He fanned four batters and none more important than Jose Bautista in the fifth inning with runners on the corners and two outs. It took Garcia five pitches to get the right fielder to swing and miss and end the inning.

The Cardinals offense also backed up their starter, smashing out two homers and five total runs in the series winner.

And Matheny was impressed with the duo of starting pitching and timely hits.

"Just seeing the combination of everything, if we have the starting pitching it seems to make everything better," he continued, "The starters are throwing the ball extremely well. That's what it's about, the consistency."
