(BaseballStL) – With their first pick of the 2014 MLB first-year player draft, 27th overall, the Cardinals selected Luke Weaver – right-handed pitcher from Florida State.

Weaver was initially drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays out of high school in 2011, but he’s played three seasons as a Seminole. Weaver was a 2014 Pre-season All American selection and went 8-4 in 16 games started and a 2.62 ERA.

The 6’2” Deland, Florida-native struck out 85 batters before the Seminoles were knocked out by Alabama in the Regional Round of the College World Series.

With their second pick, 34th overall, the Cardinals selected Jack Flaherty, a high school pitcher from California.

According to the LA Times, Flaherty’s is 23-0 over the past two seasons as a right-handed pitcher for Harvard-Westlake High School.
