(KMOV.com) – The FBI said a new scam is spreading where a person calls and tells victims a loved one has been kidnapped, before asking the victim to wire money.
The FBI said the crooks call to say a loved one has been kidnapped before they provide details about the person such as name or hair color. Authorities said the suspects often learn information about the loved one on social media.
The suspects then try to convince the victim to wire money. Authorities said the culprits have been able to steal thousands of dollars. FBI agents said the crime is growing on the east coast, but there is a possibility it could spread to other parts of the country.
