(KMOV) – Crews were cleaning up downed power lines and tree limbs left in the wake of a powerful storm in Franklin County on Wednesday.

Ameren Missouri crews were working to repair the downed lines throughout the area. Highway UU and Cherry St., which is located close to downtown Union, were hit especially hard. Trees also fell on houses and cars in the area.

A downed power line also caused issues for a Union School District school bus. Officials say the bus was traveling on Whiskey Creek Rd. near Highway BB when it almost drove over a high-power electric line on the road.

The bus stopped in time and no students were hurt.

As of 7 a.m., 7,000 residences in Franklin County were without power. East Central College in Union, Mo. intially canceled classes, but was able to resume around 10 a.m. once power was restored.

Officials say 90 percent of homes had electricity back by 9 a.m.
