(KMOV.com) – A former University City school teacher who admitted to sexually assaulting two students was sentenced to three years in prison.

Don Ingerson, 68, was a biology teacher and coach at University City High School in the 1970s and 1980s. He taught in the district for over 20 years.

Prosecutors said he confessed to multiple sexual assaults in 2012. Officials said he thought the statute of limitations had run out on the offenses when he admitted to the crimes because the assaults occurred in the 1970s and 1990s.

"I’ve been doing this a long time, this is the first time we’ve had someone contact us and say I want to talk about what I did years ago and then come in and do it," said St. Louis Prosecutor Bob McCulloch in 2012.

Ingerson was charged with rape and second-degree statutory sodomy in 2012 after telling the county prosecutor about the incidents.
