(BaseballStL) - Coming off his best start of his career, a complete game shutout against the New York Yankees, Lance Lynn pitched just 3.1 innings and gave up 3 earned runs to give him his third loss of the season.

"[Lynn] just didn't have it," manager Mike Matheny said after the game, "but that's exactly what happened. I don't think there's another way to explain it."

The Cardinals gave up four runs in the first inning after Lynn allowed consecutive hits to the first three batters of the game. But after getting an out with runners on first and second, Lynn endured a ground ball to second base but Kolten Wong couldn't come up with the double play and the Giants scored three more runs.

Matheny supported the play of his second baseman.

"Hindsight, would we like to have an out," Matheny continued, "Yea, but I'm not going to slow him down, his aggressiveness."

The big right-handler was not efficient Sunday, throwing just 46 strikes on 88 pitches through 3.1 innings coming off throwing 126 pitches in the complete game.

Unlike his previous starts, Lynn received no run support from his offense for the first time this season.
