Giants rough up Wainwright in short outing

(BaseballStL) – Adam Wainwright hasn’t pitched less than 5.0 innings since Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS series against the Washington Nationals where he pitched just 2.1 innings.

Friday night the Cardinals’ ace was roughed up by the Giants, going 4.1 innings and giving up 7 earned runs. Wainwright hadn’t lost to the Giants since May 17, 2012.

The big right hander threw 92 pitches in the affair and walked just one batter, but that walk would come around to score.

“We’ve ridden him pretty hard. Today was just one of those days where he didn’t have that control of his fastball,” said manager Mike Matheny, “Didn’t see a lot of the called strike curve balls early on and then the ones he did get in the zone, they were putting a pretty good swing on it.”

And the most obvious swing was from Hunter Pence who took a Wainwright curve ball deep to left field for three runs.

“He’s been the best pitcher in baseball for the last two months,” Matheny continued, “and today was just one of those ones you’ve just got to forget about.”
