(BaseballStL) – Following Friday night's game manager Mike Matheny announced that Oscar Taveras would be in a Cardinals uniform Saturday and that Matt Adams was headed to the disabled list.
Reports came out during Friday's game that Taveras was scratched from the line-up in Triple-A Memphis and that he was headed to St. Louis. Matheny confirmed the call.
"Oscar Taveras will be active for Saturday's game," Matheny said, "Oscar's going to get an opportunity."
The 21-year-old Taveras is hitting .325 with 7 jacks for Triple-A Memphis.
"I think everybody should be excited, I know he is," Matheny continued, "There's been a lot of people anticipating him getting here. Hopefully we can limit distractions, that way he just goes and plays the game."
With the injury to Matt Adams, the Redbirds have shuffled Allen Craig to first base and have played Jon Jay and the recently called up Randal Grichuk in right field. However, Taveras could provide an added spark to the offense.
"He's done a lot of things right for a lot of years to get the excitement level to where it is," said Matheny, "We'll get a chance to see him and hopefully he jumps on board with what we're trying to do as a club and realizes all he needs to do is his part."
