(KMOV) – A 26-year-old man is dead after an accident on westbound Interstate 64.

It happened just before 6:00 a.m. on Monday on I-64 at Jefferson.

A witness tells St. Louis police that Monty Fannon was driving his vehicle and hit construction barrels at the Market Street exit. Fannon's vehicle then veered across all lanes of traffic before hitting the median.

Police say Fannon was ejected from his vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Several east and westbound lanes on  I-64 were forced to close while crews cleared the scene of the crash. Traffic was delayed from near Jefferson, past the Poplar Street Bridge and into Illinois, causing a major back-up during the Monday morning commute.
