(KMOV)-- Falling rain and unseasonably cool temperatures could not keep St. Louisans from gathering for the American Heart Association’s St. Louis Start! Heart Walk Saturday morning.

The event began at 8:30 a.m. inside Busch Stadium. News 4’s Jasmine Huda emceed the event, and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith served as the honorary chairperson.

Walkers came in teams and individually to walk either a one-mile or three-mile route. Sponsors aim not only to raise awareness, but collect funds to help fight heart disease and stroke.

The American Heart Association's goal for the event was to raise $1,500,000. The organization received just over $879,000 as of the morning of the race, according to the website.
