(KMOV) – Homeland security officials who were just in St. Louis last month conducting earthquake drills plan to return next week to hold a disaster exercise for states along the New Madrid fault.

As the bicentennial anniversary approaches of the New Madrid earthquakes that did major damage in and around Missouri, many people in the region wonder if the area is ready for a seismic shift that could send shockwaves through St. Louis and beyond.

The chair of Washington University’s Earth and Planetary Sciences Department does not think Missouri is in any immediate danger of a significant earthquake, but since the state is on the New Madrid fault line, local leaders should always err on the side of caution and be prepared just in case of a quake.
