(KMOV) -- A pilot is dead after a helicopter crashed just outside of New Athens, Illinois.
Authorities say 59-year-old James Burks of Hot Springs, Arkansas was in the aircraft when it crashed shortly after take off Thursday afternoon.
Police are not sure exactly where the chopper originally took off, but authorities say it only made it a quarter mile or so before crashing at Werner Road and Route 13.
Burks was the pilot and was the only person on board at the time of the crash. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No official word yet on what caused the crash, but authorities say the chopper's roter seperated from the aircraft while it was spraying chemicals on a wheat field.
FAA and Transportation Safety Board officials have taken over the investigation.
