Illinois lawmaker wants to rid tax deductions for parents of obese children

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOV) – An Illinois lawmaker is trying to punish the parents of obese children by taking away their tax deductions.

The proposal, which has not been signed into law, is an effort to combat childhood obesity.

Other Illinois lawmakers have suggested a one-cent-per-ounce tax increase on drinks with high amounts of sugar.

One in five Illinois children are classified as obese.
