JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri House has given final approval to a bill outlawing synthetic marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs marketed as "bath salts."

Tuesday's 143-13 vote sent the measure to Gov. Jay Nixon.

House Republican Ward Franz, of West Plains, was the sponsor. He says the "bath salt" drugs are actually a synthetic form of cocaine that causes users to become violent toward themselves and others.

The legislation also outlaws synthetic forms of marijuana sometimes called K3. Missouri banned a different type of synthetic marijuana known as K2 last year, but drug makers tweaked the formula to get around the law.

Under this year's bill, possession of synthetic marijuana would carry the same penalty as marijuana possession.
